Departed Swansea August 2006 - destination Isles of Scilly - We noticed that the steerage under engine was very strange and was causing a large vibration.
After several hours on a course of 215T it was decided to change course for Ilfracomb and investigate the problem.
We arrived at Ilfracomb 3 hours before high water and had the permission from the Harbour Master to enter the inner harbour and moor along side the North Wall.
We waited until 1900hrs before we grounded the keel with approx 2 degree list to quayside.
After low water Alice and I inspected the hull to find to our astonishment the remains of the crustation that had grown on the bronze folding prop - we spent the next 2 hours cleaning it all off.
Many yachts in Swansea had suffered from this problem and it was commonly called 'The Worm'
Next day at high water we bid farewell to Ilfracomb and headed West on our way to the Scillies - unfortunately bad weather set in and we had to make a run for the shelter of The Camel Estuary and the port of Padstow. The weather remained unsettled so we spent the remainder of our leave in Padstow - sampling the exquisite meals in the restaurants and daily trips via water taxi to Rock which is the opposite side of the estuary
